'The design equivalent of organised chaos' - Our Q&A with Rita Konig

Rita Konig is a London-based interior designer and a celebrated style columnist. We spoke to her about trends, trays and why good lighting is even more important than wall colour...

How would you describe the style in your home?

It is the design equivalent of organised chaos. I like things that don’t necessarily match but somehow go together.

Do you have a favourite room?

Sadly I don’t really have enough rooms to pick a favourite but I do have favourite spots. I particularly like sitting in a chair that was my great grandmother’s and is now covered in a Decor Barbares fabric.

Is there a particular interior trend that you are obsessing about at the moment?

I love trays and am using them a lot at the moment. I use them as my drinks tray, and have small ones for the remote controls and creams by my bed. This is a trend I picked up in the States and liked it so much I designed my own line of lacquered trays! I love their ability to corral ordinary things and give them some importance.

How important is the use of lighting in your interiors style?

Very. I think good lighting makes all the difference to a room - in fact it is one of the things that makes the biggest difference to a space - much more than wall colour. I like a warm light and I much prefer the use of lamps in a room than ceiling lights.

What’s your most treasured possession?

I don’t think I have one. I love my stuff and I have a lot of it. I am a big shopper and accumulator, but there isn’t really one thing I couldn’t live without.
