Hands Up Shade Auction

Pooky x Hands Up Foundation : Instagram shade auction

We were delighted to host the shade auction in aid of The Hands Up Foundation and all their tireless work raising funds for health and education programmes in Syria and neighbouring countries in 2022. We gathered together a list of immensely talented artists, illustrators and designers who kindly took on the challenge of creating a masterpiece on one of our Top 'n' Tail shades. The results - and they were truly stunning - were auctioned off on our Instagram grid May 2022. All resulting proceeds went straight to the team at Hands Up.

Take a gander below at the designs and the brilliant people that took part!

Becky Blair

Becky Blair is a painter who aspires to create imagery that has strength, but is equally fleeting and momentary. After recovering from a period of chronic illness she has changed her approach to her work, pairing back her compositions and re-exploring her methods of applying paint. This work presents an exploration that speaks of joy, using colour, texture and composition to render physical aspects of life that are intangible. Working mostly in acrylic paints as she finds their versatility perfect for the techniques of layering that allow her to achieve luminous colour as well as the freedom to work quickly. Becky says "I hope my artwork brings joy, that it lifts people's spirits and maybe inspires them to be creative. That's the effect art has on me."

Jemma Powell

Oxfordshire based artist Jemma Powell draws her inspiration from nature and her travels. Working 'en plein air' in watercolour, charcoal, pencil and oil pastel, she later develops her pictures in oil on board. Jemma often works from memory – working intuitively through the process of applying the paint, wiping it off, reapplying with brush or palette knife, scrubbing it and using her fingers to make expressive marks. Jemma says: “I like the mistakes, they are the most exciting part, things start to appear and the painting takes on a life of its own.” Jemma's flower paintings reflect her love of the outdoors and the countryside that surrounds her home where she lives with her husband, singer song writer Jack Savoretti, three children and three dogs.

Lucy Kent

Lucy is a contemporary landscape artist painting in oil, predominantly en plein-air, and travels extensively with her paints. Often these smaller paintings are used to produce larger studio pieces when she returns home. Lucy views her work like a visual diary, intimately recording her experiences and the beauty in the world around her. A palette knife is used to build the layers and tell the story of the scene unfolding, which resulted in an energetic and vibrant response to the subject matter. Lucy is particularly inspired by dramatic lights and will often re-visit the same spot a few times at different times of day and year, drawing inspiration from the Impressionist movement in modern day. Although figurative in style, Lucy has a strong focus on the visceral quality of the paint itself, so areas of the painting when isolated appear completely abstract.

Lulu Guinness

Quintessentially British, Lulu Guinness is an iconic handbag brand with a legacy-making heritage - as the originator of witty, playful bags to place proudly on the table, not on the floor. It all started with a brief case, in 1989, when its then 29-year-old founder and creative director designed a ladylike attaché case containing convenient pockets for just about everything. Driven by her own style - vintage-inspired and ladylike, with a tongue-in-cheek twist - Lulu began creating the hand-held treasures that made her name. Think Lulu Guinness and think of the iconic, Dali-esque Lips Clutch, the famous Florist Basket - now part of the V&A’s permanent fashion exhibition - and The Birdcage that tweets and you have an archive that transcends fashion accessories to become works of art. Albeit works of art you can take to a party.

Rose Electra Harris

Rose Electra Harris is a London-based printmaker and painter. Having completed a degree in printmaking at the University of Brighton in 2015, she now works from her studio in south London. Rose uses her work to explore interior space, using the obscure and everyday objects to which she’s drawn to create her still lifes. Fascinated by colour, line, shape, texture and pattern, Rose places these objects – some from memory, some imagined, some collected over time – in her roomscapes, playing around with them until she finds the perfect composition, always in search of balance and harmony. Rose reimagines the colourful dialogue that exists between space and furnishings, as interested in the negative space between objects as she is in the objects themselves. She isn’t concerned with portraying objects exactly as they are, but more how they make her feel, making use of a singularly distorted, ever so slightly off-kilter, perspective to do so. To her, a room is an oasis and the things within it are what bring it to life.
