Trends for 2018: Bold geometric patterns

Bright, eye-catching patterns are going to be big in 2018. Here’s how to get some bold geometrics into your interiors with patterned lampshades and more…

There’s something deeply satisfying as well as beautiful about tessellation - those clever, interlocking patterns of geometric shapes. The good news for lovers of patterns, colours and MC Escher drawings is that bold geometrics are extremely trendy right now, giving you every excuse to cover your interiors in lovely mathematical puzzles. One of the best and easiest ways to get some striking geometric pattern into your home is to change up your lampshades. To inspire you, here are some of our favourites, perfect for turning your table lamps and floor lamps into eye-catching works of art…

Tessellated patterns

Our block-printed cotton shades are handmade in the traditional side by wonderful craftsmen based just outside Jaipur and we’re constantly amazed by the quality of the work they come up with.

We called this one Carribbean Jenga - it’s an elegant blocked tessellated pattern with soft blues and a hint of red (can you see the Carribean sunset? Perhaps that's stretching it.) Anyway it’s a gorgeous shade, and in fact stars in the February 2018 issue of Homes and Gardens in their geometrics feature. There's also a more subtle variation called White Gold Jenga

Floral geometric patterns

Floral patterns will be a big thing in their own right this year, so floral geometrics are doubly hip (although we think this Trellis pattern - another from our Jaipuran geniuses - is timeless). Try it with a smart brass or wood table lamp like the Wexford for maximum effect. - Unfortunately the trellis lamp shade and Wexford are no longer available, but please take a look at our extensive range of lamp shades here and table lamps here

Organic shapes

An alternative to floral patterns is to go for geometric schemes with motifs taking their inspiration from nature. Here’s a coral-inspired shade with bold blues and reds...

This is a shell-like fan motif…

...or how about fish scales?

Abstract motifs

At the Jaipur workshop we we played for days with literally hundreds of wooden printing blocks, and this is one result from that session. It's a sharp dark blue temple motif (or perhaps a blue flame, or even a genie. Anyway, whatever it is, it works.) 30cm empire shade in Temple Blue block printed cotton - shop here
