Liberty x Pooky lamp shade collection – a print and pattern revolution

Introducing our very exciting new collaboration with Liberty - four classic lamp shade fabric designs in contemporary colours...

Liberty, London’s most wondrous store and –  as Oscar Wilde put it –  ‘the chosen resort of the artistic shopper’ has quite a history of design collaborations. And now to a list including such luminaries as William Morris, Yves Saint Laurent and Dame Vivienne Westwood, you can add the name of Pooky!

A new limited collection of lamp shades features contemporary new artworks created in the Liberty studio, as well as historic prints chosen from the Liberty archives reinterpreted by Pooky for the next generation of interior design-lovers.

Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, each shade is made to mix, match and pair with Pooky’s collection of floor, table and wall lamps.

‘A print and pattern revolution..’

Ever since the days when Art Nouveau was popularly known as ‘Liberty style’, the great London institution has been at the vanguard of contemporary design.

Arthur Lasenby Liberty; the iconic Liberty building. Images: Liberty

Founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty was one of those Victorian visionaries who made wonderful things, and made things wonderful. In 1875 he borrowed £2,000, took a building on Regent Street and set out to create a metaphorical ‘ship’ docked in the city streets, laden with luxuries and fabrics from every corner of the globe. That dream was  fully realised in 1924, with the opening of the iconic present-day Liberty building on Great Marlborough Street. Literally constructed from the timbers of two ancient battle ships, it was and remains a six-floor wonderland of cutting-edge design, unexpected edits and beautiful wares from the world's greatest craftspeople.

Arthur declared: ‘I was determined not to follow existing fashions but to create new ones.’ We think the Liberty x Pooky collaboration follows that spirit: a brand new blend of classic heritage design and contemporary colourways to bring the Liberty ethos to the current generation of discerning interior-lovers (or, to put it another way, people who like having beautiful things in their homes.)

As Pooky’s founder Rohan Blacker said: ‘We are thrilled to finally reveal our exciting new lampshades made using Liberty’s archival prints. Liberty is one of the iconic, quintessentially British brands we have admired for so long and our shared love of colour, delicate pattern and beautiful design made this collaboration come together wonderfully.

‘We want these to pave the way for a print and pattern revolution, allowing interior enthusiasts from all over to integrate the celebrated Liberty prints into everyday lighting.’

The collection

The Liberty x Pooky collection features four exclusive designs edited in various colourways to bring together a range of beautifully printed lamp shade fabrics, all available in a range of shapes and sizes…

Poppy Meadow in lapis and mustard

Poppy Meadow in lapis in a 50cm straight empire shade; Poppy Meadow in mustard with English Garden single wall fitting by Matthew Williamson

Poppy Meadow is a classic from the Edwardian era, updated by Pooky in today’s bolder colours of lapis and mustard.

Poppy Meadowfield in jade

Poppy Meadowfield in jade 50cm straight empire shade

A stunning variation on the Poppy Meadow, this time updated and redesigned by Liberty for the collection with a strong contemporary colour palette.

Hera Plume in jade, bloomer and mustard

Hera Plume in jade 30cm straight empire shade; Hera Plume in bloomer 18cm drum shade with Drake wall fitting

In Greek mythology it was Hera who created the peacock and designed the iconic ‘eyes’ in the tail feathers, and Liberty's classic print may be the iconic peacock print of recent times. We have been lucky enough to represent this classic in three new colours.

Quill in pewter, jade and mustard

Quill in pewter 40cm straight empire shade; Quill in jade 20cm empire shade with cagney wall fitting

A contemporary, geometric pattern from the design studio at the great house of Liberty. We have been lucky enough to be granted permission to recolour this fabulous design: in a neutral pewter and vibrant bloomer and jade.

Botanica Flora

Botanical Flora 45cm drum lampshade

Botanical Flora is a classic design from Liberty’s ‘Floribunda’ strand, celebrating the historic tradition of botanical illustration in Britain. Hand-painted in the Liberty design studio, it appears here on synthetic velvet, bringing to life the soft painterly nature of the motifs. A lampshade masterpiece.
