How long do rechargeable lamps really last?

Typically you’ll get around eight hours from a rechargeable lamp. With Pooky’s Genesis Cell, it’s up to seventeen – and that’s only the start of the story….

Rechargeable lamps have really taken off – and most of them are… fine. But the real breakthrough didn’t come from a tech company. It came from Pooky! We pioneered stylish rechargeable lighting with the Matthew Williamson–designed Phileas lamp, and we’ve reinvented it again with the Genesis Cell – the very clever rechargeable light source that’s quite possibly transformed cordless lighting forever.

What do we mean by “how long”?

When people ask how long a rechargeable lamp lasts, they usually mean one of two things:

  • Battery life – how many hours it runs on a single charge.
  • Battery lifespan – how many times it can be recharged before it starts to fade.

Both matter. A lamp that shines brightly for one evening but fades after a year isn’t much of an investment. Fortunately, clever engineering (and a touch of Pooky magic) means modern cordless lighting can now do both: shine for hours and keep its sparkle for years.

How the Genesis Cell works

Here’s where things get rather exciting… Most rechargeable lamps use a battery to power a separate LED bulb. Simple, but not especially elegant. The Genesis Cell changes everything: it is the light source. A self-contained, rechargeable cell that emits its own beautifully warm glow for up to 17 hours on a single charge – no bulb required, no energy wasted, no fiddly components.

There are two versions:

  • The standard Genesis Cell (9 cm): 4 W LED, 250 lumens, providing between 12–15 hours of light at full brightness, and up to 23 hours when dimmed. It recharges in around 5 hours via USB-C.

  • The long Genesis Cell (17 cm): 5 W LED, 480 lumens, offering the same beautifully warm light for 12–15 hours on high and up to 23 hours when dimmed, with a recharge time of about 8 hours.

Because light levels and usage vary, runtimes can differ slightly between lamps – so we’ve chosen to err on the side of caution. That’s why our official guide lists a dependable 9–17 hour runtime range for everyday use.

Both are dimmable via touch or remote control, with a warm 2700 K colour temperature and CRI of 80. They’re powered by long-life lithium batteries and can be recharged hundreds of times.

The result is pretty splendid: consistent brightness, elegant simplicity, and reliability that most “ordinary” rechargeable lamps can only dream of.

The Genesis difference

Rechargeable lamps are great, but the Genesis Cell is spectacular.

It lasts up to 17 hours, gives off a gorgeously warm light, and can be swapped between compatible Pooky lamps, sconces and pendant kits. It’s the technology behind virtually all of our latest cordless designs – freeing people from cables and plugs while still looking utterly stylish.

It’s also the reason Pooky can now offer cordless wall lights, pendant kits and outdoor lamps that feel indistinguishable from their wired cousins – same quality of light, same aesthetic refinement, but with complete freedom of placement.

What affects how long your lamp lasts?

Even with advanced technology, a few habits make a difference.

Brightness settings

Full brightness naturally uses more energy. Dimming slightly can double runtime – and it creates that lovely soft Pooky glow.

Charging habits

The Genesis Cell likes regular top-ups rather than being fully drained each time. A USB-C charge gives you a quick, safe boost. It’s fine to leave it plugged in overnight, but there’s no need to keep it connected constantly.

(Top tip: buy two Genesis Cells. Keep one charged so you can swap instantly and never be left in the dark.)

Environment and handling

Extreme heat or cold shortens any battery’s life. Keep your lamp away from radiators or damp spots, and avoid dropping it – internal components are finely balanced.

How to make your rechargeable lamp last longer

Smart charging

Use the supplied USB-C cable (and a 5 V 2 A adapter). Unplug once fully charged. Give it a complete charge every few weeks to keep the battery calibrated.

Good storage habits

If you’re not using the lamp for a while, store it half-charged in a cool, dry place. Both Genesis versions are stable and long-lasting, but no rechargeable enjoys being forgotten in a humid cupboard.

Care for the lamp, care for the cell

Wipe with a soft cloth, avoid abrasives, and give it an occasional full discharge to help the battery monitor reset. With a little care, a Genesis Cell should last for years of daily use.

Are rechargeable lamps eco-friendly?

Rechargeable lighting isn’t just practical, it’s much more planet-friendly too.

Fewer disposables

No more packets of AA batteries or wasteful throwaway LEDs. One Genesis Cell can be recharged hundreds of times, meaning less waste and fewer replacements.

Built to last (and repairable too)

Pooky lamps are designed for the long haul. The lithium batteries inside each Genesis Cell can be replaced, extending the product’s life well beyond the usual two-year cycle. Buy once, enjoy for years.

Trend-proof styles

Long-life technology deserves timeless design. Pooky’s cordless lamps combine sustainability with style – natural materials, classic forms, and enduring appeal that outlasts trends.

Choosing a lamp that’s built to last

When shopping for cordless lighting, here’s what to look for:

  • Power source: Genesis Cell or long-life lithium battery

  • Charging port: USB-C (faster, safer, universal)

  • Runtime: 8 hours minimum at full brightness (Genesis = up to 17 hours)

  • Replaceability: check whether cells or batteries are serviceable

Almost all of Pooky’s latest rechargeable table lamps, wall fittings and pendant kits now use the Genesis system. But there are also beautiful cordless wall lights and picture lights that run on built-in rechargeable LEDs, with runtimes around 8 hours and a 7-hour charge time.

FAQs

How long do rechargeable table lamps last on one charge?
Pooky’s Genesis Cell lamps typically run for 9–17 hours, depending on brightness.

Can I leave my rechargeable lamp plugged in all the time?
It’s safe, but unnecessary. Unplug once fully charged for best battery health.

What kind of battery is best for cordless lighting?
Lithium-ion or Genesis Cell technology gives the best balance of efficiency and longevity.

What does 4000 mAh mean for a lamp?
It’s battery capacity. The higher the number, the longer the runtime – though Genesis achieves exceptional results through efficiency rather than size alone.

Can rechargeable lamps be used while charging?
Yes, though charging will take a little longer.
